Following an extensive development process, AIRTEC Motorsport are proud to launch our auxiliary radiator and turbo cooler kits aimed at modified Yaris GR owners who require the ultimate cooling package to maintain steady running temperatures on track or fast road use. The challengeWhen modifying the Yaris GR to increase power and torque at more extreme levels, an unavoidable by product is the additional heat level that’s transferred to the car’s cooling system. During hard use this can become a substantial issue, as we found on our own 400bhp+ Yaris GR demo car whilst testing on track. After sustained periods of hard use (similar to a round of racing), coolant temperatures would eventually reach 102 degrees, which was enough to trigger the aftermarket ECU’s safety features, putting the car into limp mode. Similarly, oil temperatures reached 123 degrees. We needed to address the car’s entire cooling system if we were going continue to modify and track our Yaris. The solutionDeveloped in-house at AIRTEC HQ in the UK we designed a series of new products to address the cooling issues when pushed to the limit. This additional radiator fits neatly behind the fog light (requires removal) and utilises laser-cut aluminium ducting to force cold air through the radiator. To create a flow path and further improve cooling, air then exits via the inner arch liner (requires cutting). A pre-cut mesh shield is supplied for both the front and rear to protect the radiator from road debris damage. The radiator is plumbed directly into the existing oil/water heat exchanger system to improve the car’s overall capacity and cooling ability, allowing it to maintain a steady temperature for longer during hard use. This can fit with any of our intercooler or oil cooler combinations to create the ultimate cooling package. The comprehensive kit also features laser-cut and powder-coated brackets, high-quality Pro Hoses silicone lines as well as all fixtures and fittings, and detailed fitting instructions. The testingWe went back to the track fitted with both our turbo and auxiliary radiators, as well as our larger Stage 3 oil cooler fitted, and were able to see a 10 degree peak drop from the coolant temperature, reducing to a much safer constant 92 degrees whilst oil temperature reached a maximum of 94 degrees thanks to a mix of the larger oil cooler allowing more surface area to cool the oil and the turbo cooler being able to reject more heat for the car’s original oil/water heat exchanger. The size of the air guides are not only larger than standard but the guide also features a side air duct, utilising the space in the upper right-hand section of the grille area to feed cold air through trunking to either the Enclosed Induction Kit or our soon to be released AIRTEC Motorsport Oil Cooler Kit. As with all AIRTEC products, the intercooler was tested back-to-back on the dyno against the OEM item. This showed a huge reduction in air charge temperatures over standard. Our test car was fitted with a Cobra cat-back exhaust system and running Revo Stage 1 software. Stock intercooler temps reduce to an average of 64 degrees and peak at 68 degrees (after 5 back-to-back runs). On the Stage 1 Revo software, the car struggled to produce a peak power increase of 40bhp, due to the restrictive and inefficient OEM VW intercooler being unable to cool the intake temperatures effectively. With the AIRTEC intercooler fitted, the IAT saw a huge drop of 120 degrees, keeping temps much closer to ambient temperature and proving to be more reliable run after run. This gave a huge increase in performance, shown by the dyno test results from AmD Tuning rolling road test day. BIG BOOST PIPE KIT AIRTEC Motorsport big boost pipe kit for the MQB EA888.3 platform. Designed to increase power and torque figures by replacing the standard restrictive boost pipes and improving air flow. With larger internal diameters on the pipework, less restriction means a smoother air flow and an increase of power. Kit comprises of smooth larger, mandrel bent hard pipes and is supplied with a full set of Pro Hoses silicone hoses including from the turbo outlet to the hot-side boost pipe. The AIRTEC big boost pipe kit is designed as a direct replacement of the OEM parts, eliminating restrictions found on the stock charge pipe while allowing enough clearance from engine parts, increasing performance in the process. We have designed the kit using 63mm hot-side pipework to keep air speed high and reduce the effects of turbo lag on big power cars.
