APR Carbon Open Intake System - MQB - 1.8T and 2.0T EA888 Gen 3The APR Open Carbon Fiber Intake System is the ultimate intake system for the 1.8T/2.0T Engine! We've maximized performance and sound dramatically by reducing pressure drop and increasing airflow. This translates to more horsepower and torque, and less physical strain on the turbocharger. The system looks great, sounds amazing, and produces more horsepower and torque you can feel.Our beautiful carbon fiber intake system does away with the closed airbox design and uses a massive 7" washable and reusable cotton filter with a frontal inlet and 4" rear outlet. This was necessary to limit pressure drop across the factory system and maximize airflow, while allowing you to fully hear the engine breathe! The massive filter provides excellent filtration. By oversizing the filter, we're able to limit pressure drop without sacrificing filtration. This is made possible through the use of greatly increased filter surface area. Carbon fiber not only looks great, but it allows us to make a complex and organic heat shield shape that keeps hot air pushed through the frontal radiator away from the intake tract. Furthermore carbon fiber allows us to limit wall thickness on the intake pipe, maximizing the pipe's internal diameter and thus airflow. Lastly, carbon fiber retains heat less than other materials, such as metal, making it ideal for performance.The factory intake system simply can’t match the performance of our intake system. The full factory frontal airbox only flows 521 CFM at 28” of H2O. We improved this by 60% with our open airbox, which flows 833 CFM by comparison! However, it’s important to always look at the intake system as a whole as flow numbers alone don’t always speak to the broader picture. The factory turbocharger can only flow just under 400 CFM through the factory opening, and any intake system will lessen maximum flow. The goal is to minimize all restrictions before the turbocharger as much as possible to maximize performance. The full factory system brings this down to 275 CFM, or 31% less. The full APR System (Open airbox, rear pipe, and turbo inlet pipe), bring this down to 345 CFM, which is only 13% less, or a 25% improvement over stock! This directly translates to more power you can feel. Our full bolt on APR Tuned S3 saw max gains of 12 AWHP and 13 AWFT-LBS of torque using the full intake system compared to stock! These are solid gains that make a noticeable difference in performance! APR Carbon Intake System - MQB 1.8T / 2.0T EA888 Gen 3 The APR Carbon fibre Intake System is an attractive high performance upgrade for the latest 1.8T and 2.0T engines as found in various MQB platform vehicles. The factory intake design has the foundation for excellent performance, but much of this is sacrificed in an effort to meet other design requirements. With requirements set forth for only supporting factory power output levels, low engine sound levels and long service intervals, there is plenty of room for improvement. The APR Carbon fibre Intake System increases performance primarily by improving mass airflow through the system while still proving adequate filtration. Expect greater horsepower and torque through the power band with a more direct and responsive feel upon pressing the throttle. Sounds from the engine and turbocharger are enhanced and some may even experience better fuel economy depending on driving style.Research and Development: Uncommon to most in the market today, APR spared no expenses during the research and development period. For the better part of a year, APR’s Mechanical Engineers created several prototype intake designs utilizing our in house Sterolithography 3D printer and other rapid prototyping techniques. Various filter mediums were tested in conjunction with the new intake designs through simulated models, flow bench analysis, dyno data collection and in real world applications all in an effort to derive the best possible solution.Intake Air Temperature Management: Intake air temperature (IAT) plays a critical role in engine performance, especially on turbocharged engines where the ambient air temperature is raised twice through both compression via the turbocharger, and then again during the engine’s compression stroke. In an effort to maintain the lowest possible starting IAT, the APR Intake system begins by drawing air from the coldest possible location, which is the front end of the vehicle before the radiator. Air travels a short path through the intake system, past the filter and on its way to the turbocharger through a sealed intake design that prevents ingestion of hot, under-hood air. Finally, the intake’s carbon composite design features a thin fibreglass backing, which improves thermal insulative properties. Filtration: APR’s design requirements called for an intake filter medium that exhibited high flow capabilities, long service life and adequate filtration properties. While traditional paper filters and even some foam filters can achieve one or more of these requirements, only a pleated cotton filter was able to achieve all three. This is due in part to the intake housing’s volute design and turning vanes. With even pressure flow distribution across the entire filter element, the filter is loaded more evenly, retaining performance over time, increasing the length of the maintenance intervals, and increasing the filter's effectiveness.Sound: In an effort to please customers unaware of the sounds caused by turbocharging an engine, as well as cross platform use on both economy and performance oriented vehicles, the OEM was tasked with creating an intake that many would consider to be too quiet for a performance vehicle. APR’s design requirements called for an intake system that only delivered the engine’s true turbocharged sound as air is sucked through the turbocharger or exhausted from the diverter valve upon lifting off the throttle. The inherent stiffness of carbon fiber composite material results in an induction resonance from the engine allowing the occupants to hear a clean and crisp intake note without being overbearing or cheap sounding in nature.Installation: The intake system comes pre-assembled from APR ready to be installed in minutes with minimal tools. With the factory unit removed, the intake slips into place and connects to the factory turbo inlet pipe using the OEM hardware without filling the engine bay with additional couplers and hose clamps. Because the system fits in the OEM location, it’s fully compatible with future upgrades from APR, including our larger Stage III Turbocharger Systems.Optional APR Silicone Coolant Hose:The factory coolant hose is designed to be routed over the top of the intake system. However, when routed underneath the intake, it’s far more aesthetically appealing. The APR coolant hose replaces the factory unit and routes cleanly under the intake and around the APR catch can without kinking or adding extra stress to the mounting points. We were lucky to get one of the first MK8R’s to enter the UK and used this opportunity to put months of development and testing into this new induction kit. Our MK8 Golf R has been put through countless hours of track day work and hill climbs, alongside the usual daily and spirited driving. This kit has been designed from the ground up, using 3D Scanning, FEA Simulation data in SolidWorks CAD, 3D printed development, and numerous dyno sessions to truly unlock the power. Simulation testing played a large part in the design process to help maximise the airflow. This included a tear drop cavity around the bonnet release mechanism to ensure that the airflow stays fast and laminar on its way to the filter element. The 3D printed prototypes helped with comparing our simulation testing to real world driving conditions. This is a valuable comparison that is used in the top tiers of motorsport, now being brought to your vehicle. During the final prototypes testing we found that the Forge induction kit with stock turbo inlet produced gains on average of 5.5BHP. However, when paired with our Turbo Inlet Adaptor FMTIA5/9 this is where the stock EA888 engine saw impressive gains, increasing power up to 16BHP at 6500RPM with a significant average power increase from 4500RPM to the 6700RPM Rev limit of 10BHP, while the drivability and the punch from extra torque increases can be felt on the road as between 4000RPM to the rev limit an average gain of 20NM is achieved. It’s worth remembering that this is with a stock ECU and no tune, so we would expect to see mapped cars returning even greater yields of power. This induction kit runs the full width of the slam panel, incorporating an elegant lip which neatly slides under the slam panel to ensure that all the cold air from the front of the vehicle flows through into the inlet tract with no detriment from the engines heat. During testing we found this to make a significant increase to airflow and a reduction to inlet air temperatures (IAT’s). Temperature and volume of air supplied to your vehicles engine that is compressed by the turbo charger has a better effect on performance when cool as this is to provide the engine with more oxygen (denser air), thus improving the combustion in each cylinder. In addition, by regulating and reducing the air temperature, it also increases the reliability of the engine by keeping the AFRs (Air Fuel Ratios) in each cylinder at a safe level; which in turn, can increase an engines power due to the air being cooler. A bigger bang is then created within the cylinder (providing the correct amount of fuel is added) - this equates to an increase in BHP and torque. It’s worth noting that this induction kit offers a massive amount of air to the EA888 engine, which is a must for anyone looking to push the performance of their car when tuning to stage 1, stage 2, and beyond. Not only do you get the bhp performance benefits, but INDK40 also offers a greater sound from the engine; particularly when on boost, and our product testers have reported a more responsive throttle too. Careful consideration into the other platforms that share the same engine configurations had also been at the forefront of our development engineers’ minds. The ECS Tuning MQB Luft-Technik (Air Technology) Dual Air Inlet Duct is a premium in-house designed engine aspiration product that increases frontal air inlet area and lowers air inlet temperatures, all while blending automotive engineering into an artistic canvas of underhood beauty. The ECS Dual Air Inlet Duct replaces the undersized OEM air inlet duct in favor of a smoother flowing and larger capacity dual air inlet scoop designed to feed massive amounts of cold outside air directly into the air filter! The OEM inlet duct was tailored to the majority of everyday drivers who prefer a muffled, relaxed driving experience. This came at the cost for air induction capacity and design. Inlet air is restricted to available airflow from two tiny passages on the opposite of the airbox at the front and rear of the inlet duct. At higher speeds we found that the rear-facing inlet draws in hot, engine-bay air into the airbox, increasing airbox inlet temps. The OEM inlet duct has further issues for performance-minded owners, such as a blocked off inlet passage directly in front of the airbox along with abrupt edges leading into the air inlet channel. By replacing the factory inlet duct with the ECS Dual Inlet Duct, considerably more airflow is available to the air filter. Our design increases frontal cold air area by as much as +285.6% for a massive increase in cool, outside air! We also measured a reduction in airbox inlet temperature of -26° F at redline! In most vehicle applications, the corrugated turbo inlet hose found in the intake system is not designed for performance or modification. It was designed to get the job done, and when adding a performance filter, intake, or tune the stock inlet hose can start to show it's weakness when suction from the turbocharger is increased. The ECS Carbon Fiber Turbo Inlet Pipe was designed in-house and made with high quality hand laid carbon fiber layers providing a strong and secure fit. A smooth interior provides unimpeded airflow, while the carbon fiber exterior adds an appearance upgrade to any engine bay. PART DESIGN The carbon fiber pipe is constructed from 2x2 twill weave carbon fiber, gloss clear coated for UV and heat protection for continuous operating temperatures of up to 300°. Designed to fit perfectly in place of the factory accordion pipe, our CAD design assures a smooth gradual transition from the intake/airbox to the turbo inlet. The included silicone hose couplers allow clean fitment of any intake setup; The smooth, straight coupler is used with a hard mounted intake pipe configurations to the engine (such as ECS Kohlefaser Luft-Technik mounted to the cylinder head) The accordion rubber coupler is used with OE-type mounting configurations (such as OEM airbox) PERFORMANCE FEATURES With its smooth interior surface as compared to the OEM accordion tube's ribbed, turbulent interior you can expect a smoother transition from air filter to the turbo inlet. Forge Motorsport have a worldwide reputation of making industry leading parts for an array of performance vehicles; as such we’ve been able to work with some of most knowledgeable professionals in the tuning industry to produce the most versatile Audi RS3 performance intake on the market. 3D scans of left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) RS3 8Y’s and RS3 8V’s gave us 4 separate vehicle scans that we could then pull together into one file that has allowed us to create one intake that fits all 4 variations. So, no matter where you’re based in the world or whether you have an 8V or 8Y RS3, the Forge Motorsport FMINDK47 is the intake for you. Trying to ensure that our performance intake is a one fit all solution also involved an understanding of how turbo inlets vary across the globe for the RS3 market. The OEM turbo elbow is an aluminium cast part with a 3” inlet tract that tapers down to the factory turbo charger cold side feed. Forge Motorsport offer and manufacture an upgraded silicone inlet elbow and turbo inlet adaptor (FMINLH9) not only to increase the area to the inlet tract but also the volumetric capacity. This has been increased to 3.5”and is the largest available product that fits RHD vehicles (due to space constraints with the brake master cylinder and is not physically possible to increase this size any further). However, this is not a problem on LHD vehicles, and as such there are various 4” variants available. To ensure our intake will work in conjunction with either the stock or any aftermarket inlet elbows on RHD or LHD vehicles we’ve incorporated an innovative solution that will be interchangeable if you wish to further enhance the engine performance of your Audi. FMINDK47 incorporates and includes modular couplers so that it can fit any size turbo inlet you may choose to run. The machined end of the carbon intake where it meets the inlet tract to the elbow has a 4”(102mm) threaded billet attachment which tapers up to the huge 6” pleated filter on the intake side. At this billet alloy junction, it enables the end user to have interchangeable adaptors. Having this amount of adjustment with a vast increase in airflow allows this product to be suitable for stock or aftermarket turbo inlet solutions whether manufactured from silicone or aluminium. This enables the enthusiast to interchange the adaptors depending on if its currently stock or modified. FMINDK47 will support your RS3 to literally any state of tune. Keeping inlet air temperatures (IAT’s) low is often a difficult part of developing induction systems, and several different variations were tested with FMINDK47. We decided on keeping the OEM air inlet to feed a specifically designed heat shield which sits flush up to the bonnet. An opening on the side opposite to the engine also helps with vehicles running stage 3+, as there is indirect airflow to this area and during testing a fully closed airbox caused restrictions. Using carbon fibre brings obvious benefits of strength, weight, and aesthetics. However, a part that is often forgotten is its low thermal conductivity, which means it reduces heat soak and transmission of heat to nearby items. Replacing metal or plastic inlet solutions for FMINDK47 will help decrease IAT’s and increase the volume of air supplied to your vehicles engine that is compressed by the turbo charger. This has a better effect on performance when cool as this is to provide the engine with more oxygen (denser air), thus improving the combustion in each cylinder. In addition, by regulating and reducing the air temperature, it also increases the reliability of an engine by keeping the AFRs (air fuel ratios) in each cylinder at a safe level, which in turn, can increase an engines power due to the air being cooler. A bigger bang is then created within the cylinder, providing the correct amount of fuel is added. This can equate to an increase in BHP and torque. We use SolidWorks CAD, 3D prints, and numerous dyno sessions to truly unlock the power. Simulation testing played a large part in the design process to help maximise the airflow. The 3D printed prototypes helped with comparing our simulation testing to real world driving conditions. This is a valuable comparison that is used in the top tiers of motorsport, now being brought to your vehicle. Being able to test 3 different 8Y RS3’s on 3 different independent dynos has been of vital importance to our development process. One of these RS3’s was (at the time of writing) the fastest 8Y RS3 in the world making 682Whp with FMINT33, FMINLH9, FMINDK47 installed along with a TTE777 Hybrid Turbo charger, this proves the FMINDK47 has great CFM airflow ratings over the standard intake system on vehicles with such a high state of tune. The other vehicles tested were a UK RHD 8Y running FMINT33. We then changed out from the OEM turbo inlet to FMINLH9 to confirm the differences in BHP with these extra modifications. We were also able to test on a LHD 8Y that was completely stock. With a completely stock tune vehicle we were able to see peak gains of 6BHP. However further analysis of the dyno graph shows that this peak BHP figure was produced 200RPM earlier (6097RPM instead of 6298RPM). Additionally, the power curves were smoothed across the entirety of the rev range, with gains seen across the board. To pull out some snapshots from the rev range as examples, at 3000RPM using just FMINDK47 saw an increase of 25BHP, and at 4500RPM there was an increase of 17BHP. Torque figures saw similar gains across the rev range, with a peak torque figure increasing by 17NM at around 100RPM earlier. When we analyse the dyno graph across the rev range, at 3000RPM using just FMINDK47 saw an increase in 55NM and at 4500RPM there was an increase of 23NM. The gains lower in the rev range are truly impressive from a driver perspective this is where the benefits can be felt and is what typically puts you in your seat when the throttle is pressed. Vehicles with a stock tune, FMINLH9 and FMINT33 already installed hit a torque limiter earlier in the rev range with the addition of FMINDK47, which in turn can limit peak power results due to the engines ECU limiting power transmitted to the gearbox. So, if you have these three products installed, we highly recommend looking to tune your vehicle to really maximise the performance of the modifications installed. It’s worth remembering that this is with a stock ECU and no tune. We know from the independent testing we also completed on mapped cars (such as KSF’s) that the Forge Motorsport products create unparalleled performance. It’s worth noting that this induction kit offers a massive amount of air to the EA855 EVO DAZA or DNWA engine, which is a must for anyone looking to push the performance of their RS3 when tuning to stage 1, stage 2, and beyond. Not only do you get the BHP performance benefits, but FMINDK47 also offers a greater induction noise from the engine; particularly when on boost, our product testers have reported a more responsive throttle which is to be expected from the impressive low down power gains the Forge intake provides. 034Motorsport is pleased to introduce the P34 Performance Air Intake System for 1.8T / 2.0T EA888 Gen3 MQB Vehicles 034Motorsport’s engineers invested significant effort in developing a comprehensive performance intake solution for Audi/Volkswagen EA888 1.8T/2.0T Gen 3 engines, which provides noticeable gains in horsepower and torque over the factory airbox. Throughout the development process, multiple designs were modeled, prototyped, and tested, to ensure that the P34 Air Intake System delivers measurable performance benefits and excellent fitment. OPTIMIZING AIRFLOW 034Motorsport engineers started by identifying the shortcomings of the factory intake system to determine which components restricted airflow to the turbocharger inlet. While the factory lower airbox and fresh air duct to the core support were more than sufficient for increased power levels, the factory air filter, upper airbox, and turbo inlet tube were deemed too restrictive, even with the factory turbocharger034Motorsport's mechanical engineers scanned the factory engine bay and modeled a one-piece unit to replace the factory intake tube and upper airbox. By eliminating the multiple couplers, transitions, and jagged features in the factory upper airbox and intake tube, 034Motorsport's engineering team was able to drastically reduce turbulence in the intake tract, and virtually eliminate pressure drop in the intake system before the turbo inlet. Multiple iterations were prototyped in plastic using 034Motorsport's in-house FDM 3D printer and thoroughly tested. Ultimately, the best-performing design was a fully-enclosed unit featuring a large-diameter one-piece intake tube with smooth transitions all the way back to the factory turbo inlet. TRUE COLD AIR INTAKE To ensure that the P34 Air Intake System draws in cool, dense air, 034Motorsport engineers opted for an enclosed design to prevent hot air from the engine bay entering the intake tract. By bolting to the factory lower airbox, this approach allows the enclosed high-flow panel filter to breathe fresh, cold air from the factory inlet duct before the radiator. APR Carbon Intake Pipe - EA888 Gen 3 1.8TFSI / 2.0TFSI The APR Carbon fibre Turbo Inlet Pipe replaces the rear factory plastic accordion tube with an attractive carbon fibre inlet, complementing the APR Intake System’s aesthetically pleasing design. The intake and inlet hose are joined via a necessary flex coupler to allow for adequate engine movement under use without damaging the intake. The turbo inlet pipe is completely compatible with all factory turbochargers and APR’s Stage III Turbocharger System.
