Whilst the original chargecooler works well on standard car, as soon more boost is added from a simple remap, the original Ford radiator struggles to sustain safe temperatures, which in turn can make the car run slower as charge air temps increase and the ECU is forced to restrict power to combat it. With huge experience in developing external oil cooler packages for a variety of modified track and road cars, and aware of the FL5 Type R’s oil cooling issues during track use, the challenge with this kit was to neatly integrate a large capacity, external oil cooler where it could still benefit from direct air flow, whilst integrating seamlessly with the car’s existing fixtures and fittings with no drilling or cutting required. Unlike previous Type R models, mounting the oil cooler in the lower bumper wasn’t possible, so we chose to utilise the upper grille area and opted to design a unique oil cooler in order to make the very most of the limited space available, rather than use a generic off-the-shelf item. As a result, in comparison to a universal 13-row oil cooler, our bespoke oil cooler has 45% more capacity and is 100%/twice as much frontal area, which means there is more air flow passing through the core to help cool it. As part of our expanding Honda platform product range, AIRTEC Motorsport is proud to launch our intercooler kit for the FL5 Civic Type R, suitable for track or fast road use. In order to ensure there is no noticeable loss in performance during extended periods of hard driving, we have developed a larger, freer-flowing intercooler that is a direct replacement for the smaller and more restrictive OEM item. Our solution to increasing the intercooler’s size and performance within the confines of the limited space behind the bumper is based upon a core design that is wider, taller and deeper. This offers a massive 158% increase in overall capacity in comparison to the original intercooler, as well as a substantial 30% increase in frontal area over standard, which allows it to make the most of the air flow provided. Importantly, we opted not to utilise a full height intercooler as this wouldn’t allow for an uprated oil cooler in the future, so looking at the bigger picture for a complete cooling package, we chose a core that was a slightly higher and wider, but twice as deep. This still allows a huge increase in performance whilst allowing for an uprated oil cooler too. The inlet and outlet sizes of the intercooler also increases from 55mm in and 59mm out to 65mm in and 70mm out, an increase of nearly 20% to further improve flow and can be used with the original pipework or our AIRTEC Motorsport larger diameter cold side boost pipe. The pipework also replaces the original O-ringed flanges with larger silicone hoses to improve flow and increase internal area. Together with our high-flow, moulded one-piece cast end tanks and an internal air diverter to ensure flow is directed correctly and efficiently, the AIRTEC Motorsport intercooler offers much greater efficiency and volume over standard. Designed to match our enlarged turbo elbow, our in-house design engineer team have created an enlarged pipework kit to replace the entire cold side, from the intercooler all the way to the throttle body. Airtec AIRTEC MOTORSPORT HOT SIDE CHARGE PIPES FOR BMW M2, M3 & M4
With improved flow and increased strength over the original plastic items, our charge pipes link the turbos to the charge cooler and are suited to modified BMW M3, M4 and M2 Competition models for track or fast road use. The pipes have been designed to improve the overall internal dimeter and flow of the original OEM pipes, which flatten considerably where they pass over the top of the engine. The original OEM pipes are also made from a lightweight plastic, and with the increased boost pressures associated with a remap or hybrid turbos, the plastic seams can split and form a hairline crack. This is often invisible to the eye, but it’s an issue that will affect the engine’s performance and the turbos’ longevity. The AIRTEC Motorsport replacement pipes are constructed from alloy, so they will not fail with higher boost pressures and maintain a 57mm internal dimeter from the start to finish. Both pipes also feature a 1/8NPT port fitting suitable for a methanol injection set up, and the exterior of the pipes are finished in a subtle black powder coat. The kit features two silicone joiners as well as two CNC-machined connectors to house the original BMW O-rings, with adapters for the replacement fixtures and fittings that come as part of the kit. Fitting takes around 2 hours and the original engine cover can still be fitted in place, but for a perfect fit, we recommend enlarging the apertures slightly, which can be done neatly in order to retain the original look. As the standard system can struggle to maintain temperature, especially on a tuned application, the keys to ensuring a consistently lower running temperature are to increase the capacity of the system and its ability to cool it. AIRTEC Motorsport’s solution to improving the original set up is utilise the available space behind the front bumper and develop a chargecooler radiator that measures nearly 100mm taller and 20mm thicker overall. This means capacity is increased by a huge 5.4 litres over standard, which is over double the capacity of the original. Frontal area is also increased by 40% to help cool the extra capacity. Despite the huge increases that will allow the chargecooler system to run cooler for longer, the radiator fits neatly behind the bumper and requires no modifications to fit, using the OEM mounts and the original coolant connectors. To protect the larger core in its vulnerable position at the front of the car, there is also a (removable) stone guard. The SolutionAIRTEC Motorsport’s solution to improving the original set up with the limited space available behind the bumper to make it any wider or taller was to instead extend it forwards by introducing a core that’s nearly 60mm thicker, at 90mm in depth. This allowed the use of a triple pass core design to allow the coolant to pass through the radiator three times before it exits, with capacity increased to a huge 23.3 litres, compared to the original 7.7 litres; a gain of 203%. Despite the huge cooling capacity increase that allows the chargecooler system to run cooler for longer, the radiator fits neatly behind the bumper and requires no modifications to fit, using the OEM mounts and the original coolant connectors. Importantly, to protect the larger core in its vulnerable position at the front of the car, there is also a protective stone guard fitted in place to deflect road debris that can cause damage, as OEM radiators have been known to fail when stones or similar flick up and permanently damage the core. As part of our expanding Hyundai product range, AIRTEC Motorsport is proud to launch our cold side big boost pipe kit upgrade for the i20N suitable for track or fast road use. A direct replacement that offers increases in performance and response, our enlarged cold side boost pipe kit replaces the hoses from the intercooler to the throttle body with a freer-flowing design that offers increased internal capacity. The original hose is 53mm in diameter and follows a series of relatively tight bends. We developed an enlarged hose kit that measures 63mm from beginning to end, offering a significant internal capacity increase of 19%. It also features fewer tight bends to further reduce restriction and improve flow, providing an increase in power and response. Made from high quality aluminium, the kit includes our own 63mm throttle body flange, Pro Hoses silicone connectors and all pipework is finished in powder-coated black for a subtle OEM+ look. The installation package includes all fixtures and fittings, and detailed instructions.
